How much have I improved? A year ago I drew Algernon’s older sister, Scarlett, for the first time. Today I decided to remake that original drawing. Scarlett is a character I came up with over the span of a couple hours when we were playing a D&D one-off session and needed new characters, and the first drawing was done pretty hastily just before we played so I could make a pog out of it. That said, I was pretty proud of it at the time. I’ve been pretty down on my artistic skill over the years, but even I have to admit I think I’ve made a lot of progress.
I think I’ve grown pretty attached to these characters, artistically. Algernon was the first D&D character I ever played and Scarlett is the first original character I designed entirely on my own. I definitely want to do more with them in the future, especially in comic form.
So Happy First Birthday, Scarlett! Enjoy it now, cause you may end up having to take your brothers place in LPD&D depending on how the next sessions turn out.
I know it’s not entirely relevant but today’s Algernon’s sisters birthday!
Happy Halloween, everyone!

Is acid breath a DeLaFlor family thing, or do Scarlet, Algermemnon, and Beowulf have different types? Also, can Scarlet use her magic to augment and improve her breath weapon? I would use Askernon, but… ya’ know.
Sorry about the lack of updates to Askernon, with the way things have been going lately I haven’t had much energy to do a lot of art. I’m going to keep it going though cause I do enjoy doing it. Feel free to ask there.
Anyway, Algernon is an acid-spitter. He most likely inherited that from his dad. Scarlett and Beowulf are fire-breathers, which I’ll just say they inherited from their mother who I haven’t drawn yet (although I do have ideas).
As for the augmenting, that would kind of depend. 4th Edition D&D has a number of feats that change how breath weapons work without really explaining how that happens. For instance, there’s a feat that lets you throw your breath weapon and have it explode in a burst around a target rather than just breathing it out. The flavor text doesn’t say why, but in my head I just picture Algernon spitting up a ball of acid, so it would make sense to me that Scarlett would just sorta catch and it hurl it magically? I think my ideas for how magic work differ from the typical D&D universe, though.
Actually it’s kind of fun to do these in text, too. Maybe that’s something I can do on tumblr?
So it’s been a while
Holy crap it’s been like a month since I answered any questions! I’m super sorry about that everyone, but real life stuff and general laziness has gotten in the way. I would love to get back on the answer-wagon soon, though.
Yeah, I get it Al. I’ve been neglecting your blog like crazy. I’ll try to do more updates soon.
In the meantime, did you know that the artist behind Ask Algernon is currently actively accepting commissions? Why not stop on by and get yours today!?
